- Year 9
- 24 questions
- 6 A4 pages
- Worked answer key
- Calculator where stated
PDF · 59 KB · prints at actual size on A4 · questions on pages 1–3, answers on pages 4–6

What the worksheet covers
- Expanding and factorising quadratics
- Index laws and standard form
- Rearranging formulae
- Straight-line graphs
- Pythagoras and trigonometry
- Probability
- Compound and reverse percentages
- Simultaneous equations and inequalities
The questions are grouped into sections that move from fluency to reasoning and problem solving. Each question has its own answer box and space for working, and the answer key explains the method rather than giving the answer alone.
Worked example
Example: (x + 2)(x + 5) = x2 + 5x + 2x + 10 = x2 + 7x + 10. Multiply every term in the first bracket by every term in the second.
The example on the worksheet is separate from the 24 questions, so it never gives an answer away.
Sample questions
- Expand and simplify (x + 4)(x + 3).
- Factorise x2 + 8x + 15.
- Simplify a5 × a3.
- Simplify (2x3)2.
Show answers to the sample questions
- x2 + 7x + 12. Multiply each term: x2 + 3x + 4x + 12, then collect like terms.
- (x + 3)(x + 5). Find two numbers that multiply to 15 and add to 8: 3 and 5.
- a8. When multiplying powers of the same base, add the indices: 5 + 3 = 8.
- 4x6. Square the 2 to get 4, and multiply the indices: 3 × 2 = 6.
How to use it
- Print pages 1–3 for the learner and keep pages 4–6 (the answer key) for marking.
- Read the instructions box: Show your working in the space and write each answer in the box. Use a calculator only where a question says so. Give exact answers unless told to round.
- Work through the sections in order, showing working in the space and writing each final answer in its box.
- Mark with the worked answer key, talk through any mistakes, then retry those questions a few days later.
Printing tips
- Paper and scaleA4, portrait, scale set to “actual size” or 100%, not “fit to page”.
- Black and whiteThe light layout is designed for greyscale printing and photocopying.
- Questions onlyChoose pages 1–3 in the print dialog to keep the answers separate.
- Phones and tabletsOpen the PDF, then use Share › Print (iPhone and iPad) or the menu › Print (Android).
