How to read the times tables chart

To find 7 x 8, start at 7 on the left and move across to the column headed 8. Where they meet, the answer is 56.

Now find row 8 and column 7. The answer is still 56: swapping the two numbers gives the same answer.

Three ways to learn your times tables

Start with the 2s, 5s and 10s. Say the facts aloud, then cover the answers and try them in a mixed order.
Double a fact you know. If 2 x 6 = 12, then 4 x 6 = 24 and 8 x 6 = 48.
Build a tricky fact from easier ones. For 7 x 8, add 5 x 8 = 40 and 2 x 8 = 16 to get 56. Practise again until you can recall 56 without working it out.

Try five minutes of practice: choose a few facts, cover the answers, check them and revisit any you missed tomorrow.

The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

The statutory Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check is taken in June. It contains 25 questions, with six seconds for each answer, and gives more weight to the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables.

The real goal is automatic recall. If a child reaches 7 x 8 by counting up in sevens, the next step is practising until 56 comes to mind straight away.
