What the worksheet covers

The questions are grouped into sections that move from fluency to reasoning and problem solving. Each question has its own answer box and space for working, and the answer key explains the method rather than giving the answer alone.

Worked example

Example: d/dx (5x4 − 3x) = 20x3 − 3. Multiply by the power, then reduce the power by one.

The example on the worksheet is separate from the 24 questions, so it never gives an answer away.

Sample questions

  1. Differentiate y = 4x3 − 5x2 + 7x − 2.
  2. Find ∫(6x2 − 4x + 3) dx.
  3. Evaluate ∫13 (3x2 + 2) dx.
  4. Solve log2 x = 5.
Show answers to the sample questions
  1. dy/dx = 12x2 − 10x + 7. Multiply by the power and reduce it by one for each term; the constant differentiates to 0.
  2. 2x3 − 2x2 + 3x + c. Raise each power by one and divide by the new power. Include the constant of integration, c.
  3. 30. Integrate to get x3 + 2x. Then (27 + 6) − (1 + 2) = 33 − 3 = 30.
  4. x = 32. Rewrite in exponential form: x = 25 = 32.

How to use it

  1. Print pages 1–4 for the learner and keep pages 5–8 (the answer key) for marking.
  2. Read the instructions box: A calculator is allowed. Take g = 9.8 m/s² in mechanics questions. Show full working and give non-exact answers to 3 significant figures unless told otherwise.
  3. Work through the sections in order, showing working in the space and writing each final answer in its box.
  4. Mark with the worked answer key, talk through any mistakes, then retry those questions a few days later.

Topics follow the A level subject content set by the Department for Education; exam boards publish their own formulae booklets. This worksheet is selected practice, not a complete test of the year or course. See also the A-level formula sheet, which links to each board’s booklet.

Common questions

Is this worksheet free?

Yes. The A-level maths worksheet is free to download, print and photocopy for home or classroom use. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

Are the answers included?

Yes. Pages 1–4 are the questions and pages 5–8 are a worked answer key with the method for every question, so you can print the questions on their own.

How do I print it at the right size?

Use Print on this page, or open the PDF and print on A4 paper in portrait with the scale set to actual size or 100%, not “fit to page”. It prints clearly in black and white.
